Ethereum developers are discussing the next upgrade called "Cancun-Deneb," which is expected to begin later this year.
Ethereum developers are discussing the next code upgrade for the blockchain's consensus layer in preparation for the upcoming upgrade called Cancun-Deneb. Following the launch of the Shapella upgrade earlier this month, developers are now working on the next upgrade, which is expected to be released by the end of this year.
To clarify, the upgrade for the execution layer will be called Cancun, while the upgrade for the consensus layer will be named Deneb. Therefore, the combined upgrade will be known as Cancun-Deneb.
The most significant change expected in the Cancun-Deneb upgrade for Ethereum at the end of this year is the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 4844, also known as "proto-danksharding." EIP-4844 aims to improve Ethereum's scalability beyond the current capabilities of Layer 2 solutions.
If EIP-4844 is successfully implemented, it is expected to reduce transaction costs on Layer 2 rollups, including Optimism and Arbitrum, compared to current rates.
Developers have also announced the upcoming launch of a multi-client devnet for testing EIP 4844 next week, as stated by Christine Kim, head of research at Galaxy Digital, who participated in the developer meeting. Notably, EIP-4844 has already been tested on four other devnets.
